The goose is getting fat

I totally love the Christmas season.

I've had holiday music in my car since October.

We bought two artificial trees and fully intended to cut down a REAL tree... until winter storm Allison blew through. Yes, we name our storms like the south names their hurricanes. It makes me laugh until I can't get out of my driveway because the snow drifts are too high.

So now, because we procrastinated buying a tree, the fake ones are half price (because WHO doesn't have a tree by now??) and it looks like that will be our best option. I have never liked artificial trees much, but I found a beauty at Target that looks and feels real AND is pre-lit. Yee-haw!

The girls are also very much in the Christmas mood. The other night they put on a musical for us. Here they are singing their favorite Christmas song, "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas."Nice choreography, girls.
In the actual play, Daisy was Santa and the others were the reindeer. We would have recorded it but once the cameras appeared, the whole production deteriorated into a fit of giggling.

I have been extremely busy putting together the Sacrament Meeting Christmas program. Our theme for this year is "tidings of comfort and joy" and the text comes entirely from the scriptures and church leaders. My job was picking the theme, writing the text, arranging musical numbers and recruiting a choir. I'm really excited about the way it turned out but it has consumed me. Fortunately, it will all be over on Sunday. In addition, I put together a digital scrapbook of 2008 that I thought was discounted if I finished it before a certain date. I finished it, but didn't get the discount. I was ready to trash the whole project ("Forget 2008 - who needs it!") but Kelly intervened and reasonably decided that even full-price was cheaper than my feeble attempts at traditional scrapbooks. Thank heavens one of us has any reason left after the holidays.

Today I finished all my shopping and mailed our last package to Texas (get ready Annie and Romney - here it comes!) I have had such fun shopping this year. Just knowing that we don't have to worry about traveling with presents makes a huge difference. We are all so excited to stay put this Christmas, even though we will miss our families and the festivities. Fortunately, we have good friends who are also here without family and we will celebrate together. It's definitely not a replacement, but it is a little panacea.

I will miss our Christmas Eve celebration with the B.J. cake; Kelly will NOT miss getting sick to his stomach (he does it every year in SL), Lizzie is really sad that Gramps will not be visiting in his Santa suit and constantly fixing the pillow stuffed in his jacket (Dad, I'm so glad you have to use stuffing). Anna is missing her cousins and all the fun she has with them; and Daisy has never had a Christmas here in Wisconsin so she doesn't know what to miss; she only knows that she wants a hippopotamus for Christmas. And she tells me often.

I promise to be a better blogger from now on, and to keep the spirit of Christmas always in my heart.

P.S. Lizzie would like a Zhu Zhu pet for Christmas but we recently read that they cause cancer if they are sucked on. Even though Lizzie has promised not to suck on her pet hamster, Lucy didn't make such a promise. Does anyone who reads this blog have any thoughts about the carcinogenic effects of the Zhu Zhu pets?

I saw the same report, I wouldn't be too concerned. Plus, you could tell Lizzie she has to care for it just like a real pet: put it away when not in use and watch Lucy if she plays with it. What's childhood if we aren't allowed to play? Who knows what carcinogens were in the toys we played with as kids. Merry Christmas!

Enjoy the holidays in Wisconsin! I am trying to picture your snow drifts...you will have to photograph them! The last I heard on the Zhu Zhu pets is that it was a consumer watch group that performed the test and came out with that report, but since, the government has done their own checks and they've come out all clear, within the levels allowed. So, I guess it depends on who you trust...hmmmm.

Oh, I heard the Zhu Zhu pet was just another Chineese ploy to take over the world one carcinogenic product at a time.
Heather (above) has the right idea about treating it like a real pet. You might even give her a special box to put it in.
The reason we didn't play with cancer-causing toys is that our toys were all made in the USA!! (Another rant for another day.) It was our asbestos ceiling that will get all of us.

I don't know anything about Zhu Zhu pets, so unfortunately (or fortunately) I can't give any opinion. I just wanted to say good luck on Sunday! Planning the Christmas Sacrament Meeting is a huge deal (I've been there) - I hope it goes well! We'll miss seeing you here in Salt Lake but hope you have a wonderful Christmas, snow drifts and all! :)

Hi Amy! I just spent a blissful 10 minutes catching up on your blog while eating melted chocolate chips and pretzels - Oliver's taking a nap, Lizzie and Eli are at choir and Ivy's playing with a friend.

You are so funny and your blog is delightful. I've decided to write a few New Year's Resolutions of my own... like cook dinner at least once a month and watch some television with my husband every once in a while...thanks for the idea!

And thank you for the charming posts!! :)

You make me laugh! I can unfortunately relate to having a baby who's diaper nearly kills you. I hear that Zhu Zhu pets are incredibly disappointing and certainly not worth the cancer risk (you could always use that as your excuse NOT to get them). I am so glad you got to stay home for the holidays and enjoy your family. It looks like you've had a lot of fun! Thank goodness for blogs! I've loved a peek into your life:-) Have a great weekend...
