For those of you who have perfect vision and have wondered what it looks like when you need glasses, this image is just about right. But that's not what this post is about. The sun did not shine
It was too wet to play
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold, wet day.
This is Daisy's very favorite book right now. She asks for it every night before bed and before she goes down for her nap. I am proud to say that I just about have the entire thing memorized. It is a great story and I love all the rhyming words. But my favorite part is that when we get to the page where the mother comes home, she points to her, says, "They mommy." I tell her yes, that is the children's mommy. Then she points to me and says, "And you my mommy." Again, I tell her yes, and then she sits back contentedly for me to finish the book. It happens every time we read and it's my favorite ritual of the entire day. I think in a small way, it's her first attempt at figuring out the universe and I love being part of that process.
The older girls are loving the Boxcar Children books. I am not quite as excited about these, mostly because they are so completely formulaic. Will the Alden children find a mystery? Of course they will. Will they be able to escape certain danger? Always. Will they always speak to each other kindly and lovingly? Without exception. So I am really excited to move on, but I need to find books that aren't too scary for bedtime.
Please respond to this post and tell me what books your kids are loving. We are always shopping for new favorites. Plus, I need to hear that I'm not the only one who is memorizing children's books these days.

I don't have any ideas for the older kids, sorry. But, Daisy and the twins are close in age, so here are the books they love right now: 1) The Way I Feel by Janan Cain 2) Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae and 3) No No, Yes Yes by Leslie Patricelli. Another good one, but my kids aren't into it yet is 4) I'm Still Here in the Bathtub by Alan Katz- you sing it. Anyway, preview them online or at the bookstore/library and see if Daisy's interested. If you have any other favorites, I'd love to hear about them. We could always use another good book. And yes, I read FAR more kids books than grown-up books. Sadly, if I'm reading a grown-up book, it's usually about how to be a better parent so it's still all about the kids! Have fun reading.
The Scholastic book orders are actually for me instead of Harrison and Tanner! I start my kids on books when they're a few months old so we get in the habit. We love rhythmic books. So here are our favorites for now:
Silly Sally by Audrey Wood (can be sung to “We are a Happy Family”)
The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst
One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root, illustrated by Jane Chapman
Ten Minutes Till Bedtime by Peggy Rathman (same author as Goodnight Gorilla)
The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton
Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton
What Moms Can’t Do by Douglas Wood, illustrated y Doug Cushman
Mooses Loose Tooth by Jacquleine A. Clarke, illustrated by Bruce McNally
A Pair of Socks by Stuart J. Murphy, illustrated by Lois Ehlert
Missing Mittens by Stuart J. Murphy, illustrated by G. Brian Karas
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault, illustrated by Loi Ehlert
Chicka Chicka 123 by Bill Martin Jr. andd Michael Sampson, illustrated by Lois Ehlert
I love all your recent posts! Kelly's trip to NYC - I'm so impressed with the subway banner! It's huge! So cool. He's practically famous.
So, I completely memorized "Where the Wild Things Are", "Green Eggs and Ham" ("They are so good, *so* good, you see!" comes in handy at dinnertime) and "Madeline" when Lizzie was little, and Ivy loves all the same classics.
The Magic Tree House books are also formulaic, but informative. I'm really glad Lizzie has recently discovered she likes Beverly Cleary and is enjoying "The Mouse and the Motorcycle." We're also currently reading "Because of Winn-Dixie" out loud, and Lizzie and Eli both love it.
Good luck!
I loved to Beverly Cleary books; Ramona the Pest, Ramona and Bezus. You can't beat them for fun!
