How do you spoil a cupcake?

I have been a terrible blogger lately, not posting during the most exciting month of our year.  Anna's birthday was on the 1st, Lizzie's was yesterday, Kelly and I went to Florida last weekend, and all the parties and adventures have been too overwhelming for me.  I haven't known where to start writing.  So I'll start with the trivial and mundane.

Kelly and I went out for cupcakes a few weekends ago.  Yes, the ultra-trendy fad has arrived in Appleton at long last.  Fratello's is a fancy restaurant in town and they've added a cupake menu to their already-extensive offerings.  The last time Kelly and I ate there, I ordered the fish special and was served INSTANT mashed potatoes.  It was disheartening to say the least.  And yes, I can always tell real from boxed potatoes.  But this was cupcakes and really, how can you spoil a cupcake?

I ordered the strawberry shortcake cupcake and was pleased with how it looked, in spite of the frozen berries (we are in Wisconsin, after all, where everything was frozen just a month ago).  But I knew after the first bite that we had a problem.

So, what can spoil a cupcake?  Four words: Non-Dairy Whipped Topping.  In the dairy state, it should be a crime to ever use NDWT, but in a restaurant claiming to be fancy, it should be a felony.  So now I'm a cupcake cynic in desperate need of cupcake redemption.

But I think the real crime here...is the beard.  Sorry, but I had to include that, the best line of the entire season 4 of "The Office."

Amy, it's got to be terrible for a member of our fabulous Culinary Society to suffer in this way! We don't go out so much anymore because we find ourselves so disappointed. The food we make at home is so much better. Come visit me and we'll make some cupcakes to remember, and you can thaw your toes at the same time. :)

By the way, we just got back from Florida too! I can't wait to hear about your adventures there!
