A few weeks ago, we had a terrible storm with strong winds. Lizzie and Anna were very nervous that one of the huge trees in our yard would fall on the house. We have spent the ensuing time persuading them that it would never happen. So yesterday we had another big storm blow through and the girls were in the family room watching a movie while I was upstairs. I heard a snap, crackle, and pop, followed immediately by two screams, "Mom!"
Right outside the back sliding glass door was this enormous tree. They were terrified and may never believe a word we tell them ever again. Miraculously it didn't hit anything vital (though it was two feet from the house) and the only loss was to one tomato plant and a zinnia. When I finally got hold of Kelly, he told me, "Don't move it." I told him not to worry about that.
When he got home last night, he borrowed the neighbor's chain saw (it was his tree, after all) and went to work chopping it into bite-sized pieces. He did amazing work. I am a little nervous, though, about one chunk of trunk, peeled of its bark, that is sitting on our back table today. It looks like it is begging to be carved and even though Kelly can wield a chain saw like nobody's business, I'm not sure about his ability as a sculptor. And don't those things always end up as grizzly bears or something rustic like that? When I told him that I thought the 10th anniversary was the year of wood, I was thinking more like furniture, NOT a bear sculpture...

I am glad your house didn't get hit! I love that you had been telling the kids it would never happen and then it did...that happens to me all the time, it is uncanny. They think I am a terrible liar! Lizzie's camp sounds so fun (minus the mosquitos), it brings back memories of my Brownie days!
Whoa- that hit way too close to home - literally!!!
I'm glad you guys are all okay!
Seriously, does God want Moms to be turned into liars? Doesn't it always happen like that? "No honey, that only happens in movies..."
That was a close one! At least Kelly had a reason to wield the chain saw! I always find it sad to have such a large and old tree go down. It would be easier to build my house again than to replace any of my trees! (I have been working really hard in my yard lately, so disregard my tree lamentation.)
I'd actually prefer a totum pole. Any chance it is a tall enough piece? I can see it now, Eagle atop beaver atop bear...
Maybe something cool like the Lee's had in the scrub oak out in back by the gully.
Dean Pace wasn't too good for the chainsaw bear--I think you should embrace it too.
Oh My!!! Your girls will never forget that! We do have quite the storms here! Glad there wasn't any damage!
