Last week, Lizzie and her Brownie troop spent the week at Camp Winnecomac, which might sound like an unusual name for a camp, but when you consider that it is in the town of Kaukauna in Outagamie County, it doesn't seem so strange.
I had to drop Lizzie off every morning and we had to spray Deep Woods Off before leaving home because the mosquitos started following our car the second we turned off the road in anticipation of Lizzie's sweet blood. I have never seen bugs like that in my life... including the summer I worked at Brighton Camp. Because of all the flooding we had earlier this summer, we are having an especially bad mosquito year. And, lucky girl, Lizzie is a favorite target.
At camp, they did all the great camping things: made boondoggles, tie-dyed, sang silly songs, did a ropes course, cooked out, and did a scavenger hunt. They also did some unusual things, like painting faces (of course this happened on a day when we had piano lessons and gymnastics and her face was one giant royal blue and black flower) and walking to the local swimming pool. I was so sad to miss Lizzie's debut jump from the high dive! Hopefully she'll be more daring than me and will go off again when I am there to see.
The last night of camp was a sleepover; her first time ever in a sleeping bag. From the sound of it they didn't sleep much (isn't that part of camp, too?) and we paid for it the next day... and the day after that. On her first night home, I found a little note on my bed that said "To Mom and Dad." I opened it, thinking it would say that she missed us and was glad to be home. My golden moment was dashed when I read, "I miss Camp Winnecomac. Please can I go back. I'll give you a dollar." She is now talking about a career as a camp counselor.

On Lizzie's ability to attract mosquito bites...
We went to Wyoming to visit my parents and Grampa decided to take the kids for a walk to the park (at 9 p.m.)! Before I could object--and apply bug spray--they were long gone! When they got home Paige and Ellie had no less than 30 bites between them--all on their uncovered legs. Ellie was wearing capris and Paige shorts. That was the first day of the trip and the rest of the week was spent trying every remedy in the book for the itching! Poor things, the bites were so swollen I didn't even know what to do next!!! I guess they are sweet. Wesley didn't have a single bite and he was wearing shorts too! The bites coupled with sunburns made for a lovely vacation!
Gee mom, I wanna go to day camp, gee mom, I wanna go, where do you wanna go? Gee mom I wanna go to camp.
I loved girl scout camp too. Secretly, I still have a tattered white Mervyns box full of all of my day camp stuff, yes, from when I was 6. I even have the gifts my counselors gave me. Don't tell Trevor, but you can tell Lizzie.
xoxo
