Best Book of the Year

I've been trying for too long to import the image of Team of Rivals: the Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln and it won't import. Maybe I should spend a little more time playing with blogger and less time reading. Nah...

A few months ago, I asked my friend Cheryl for a good book on Lincoln. Cheryl is my resident expert on history and the books that tell it. She said that Team of Rivals is not only the best book about Lincoln, it's one of her favorite books of all time and that she envied me the read (that's bookey talk for "You gotta read this book!")

When I bought it and it weighed 10 pounds, I thought she was nuts. When I finished it this week I'm sure she was totally right. It took me nearly five months to finish it, but it was worth every page. I think that, growing up in the west, we never adequately covered the Civil War and the events that led up to it. I know that we never spent enough time on Lincoln in US history (of course, my teacher was convicted of fraud the year after I had him, so learning about "honest Abe" probably wouldn't have appealed).

I'm afraid that if I write too much about it, my review will come across as trite and sappy, like a Hannah Montana episode. This is SO much more than that. All I can say is that it should be on everyone's "to-read" or Christmas wish lists. And if you know Cheryl, ask her for books to read. She knows.
