Reality Bites

I had a very surreal moment the other night. I was waiting for my second-favorite show, "The Biggest Loser," to come on and just happened upon the last few minutes of a show called "Beauty and the Geek." I haven't watched this show before but it doesn't take long to figure out that a "beauty" is paired up with a "geek" and they are supposed to make each other better. Well, one of the geeks is a woman who is described simply as "musicologist." That caught my attention. So I watched for a minute and discovered something shocking. I didn't think this woman was a geek. In fact, if I was in a room with all the contestants from that show, I would probably gravitate to the geek side and find friends there. The self-described "beauty" that the poor musicologist (a PhD level title, BTW) was paired with reminded me of the guy who torments Napolean Dynamite, and I felt sorry for the poor smart girl, who was definitely not ugly enough (by my standards) to be on the show.

So I have been in a bit of a crisis trying to figure out if I'm a geek, too. I have always described myself as a geek, but to see it played out on television was a different story. So I'll pose the question: am I truly a geek? Please remember that your responses cannot be anonymous on this site...ha ha. What I have told myself is probably the best advice: TURN OFF THE TV! These shows aren't meant for people like me. And suddenly I've elevated myself from geek to intellectual superior. Ahh, that feels much better.

I'd rather be on the geek side anyday. I don't watch that show either, but to me depth of character is way more important than perfect physique. On that note, if you consider yourself geeky, know you are also a beauty!

I saw her too, under the EXACT same circumstances (waiting for Biggest Loser). I thought she was cute too. The guy was an absolute moron. (Sorry for the harsh term, but there isn't a better word.) I would SO rather be the geek in that pair. I think we are all geeks about something or another. Embrace your music geekness!!!
