Dairy-Free, week 2

My pediatrician thinks that Lucy may have a milk "sensitivity." That's the more accurate way of saying allergy. No worries, she'll grow out of it, but in the meantime, guess who has to avoid all milk products?

Me.

Yes, the easy thing would be to put her on soy formula and get on with life, but I don't believe in easy, apparently. So I'm learning about dairy products, like milk, cheese, yogurt, pizza, bread, butter, ice cream, and chocolate. It's amazing how many things contain some form of milk protein! The doctor told me that I'd get real skinny real quick on this diet, and she wasn't kidding. (Why do I think that only a woman could have told me that? If my pediatrician was a man and he said I'd get skinny, I probably would have cried a little.)

Here are a few things I've learned:

I have learned that I don't much care for soy milk, even the chocolate kind.

Hershey's syrup doesn't contain milk, but it's hard to drink alone.

Soy ice cream is actually pretty good, as long as it has mix-ins.

My body needs milk fat. I am always hungry, even after I've just eaten.

I actually have pretty good willpower. I haven't cheated, not even once. I've wanted to, but I haven't.

We go to the doctor again in late April. That's when we'll evaluate the effectiveness of denying myself all the best foods in the world. I'm not bitter... just hungry.

I had to eliminate milk proteins with Katherine (I was happy when she weined herself at 10 months), and I did the same with Ellie. This time around I did start the milk again at 3 months and Ellie tolerated it . . . Phew! Try Toffuti Cuties - they are like ice cream sandwiches, and VERY yummy. Those along with Oreos kept me happy instead of grumpy. Good luck!!

Amy, you are a saint! Thanks to mom for practically raising us on all foods containing milk, I don't know how you're doing it! Way to go...at least there are several yummy candies that don't have any milk...

By the way, have you found any Starburst Jelly Beans this year? They have vanished from all Dan's shelves. I'm in a little crisis.

What a great Mom you are! I love dairy, it would be really hard to give it up! I hope the diet change helps Lucy's tummy, and that this year of nursing goes quickly so you can get back to the cheese! Oooh, but not too quickly!

Oh, honey, I'm sorry! I did three weeks of the no milk thing with Jill, but it didn't help. After they took away all milk, chocolate, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, garlic, pizza I'd had enough. My poor baby only breast fed for 8 weeks. But, she was much happier on the formula and I don't love breastfeeding that much so it was a bonus for me too. Good Luck!
